Code of practice for construction in timber framing (known as the SAA Timber Framing Code) (incorporating Amdts 1 and 2)
standard by Standards Australia, 06/30/1979
Describes a minimum standard of construction in stress-graded timber to ensure a satisfactory degree of strength and durability in the structural framing and flooring of residential and light commercial or industrial buildings constructed in the conventional manner. Sections give general requirements and recommendations and specific requirements for sub-structure, floor framing and flooring, wall framing, roof framing and nailing, and anchorage and fabrication of nail-laminated beams. Appendices tabulate the relationship between structural grades and stress grades for unseasoned and seasoned timber for a range of commonly used species. They also give additional advice on site preparation, framing in highwind areas and protection against on-site damage or deterioration of stored materials. Available separately, but intended for use with the code, are the Timber Framing Span Tables Supplements. These are computer-calculated tables according to stress grade and condition of dryness, which give the maximum allowable span for Australian and imported species according to their intended use or purpose in the building frame. Not all of these supplements will be required by designers. It is probable that not more than four stress grades of structural timber will be available in any particular district.
